Introduction
If you grew up in the 90s, you probably remember the Mega Bloks Planetoids sets, which were a hit among kids who loved space themes. These sets were similar to the Space-themed LEGO sets and included several alien figures.
Mega Bloks company was founded in Canada in 1967 as Ritvik Toys by Victor Bertrand and his wife Rita. They started off making toys for toddlers, but their building blocks quickly gained popularity for their resemblance to Lego bricks.
I recently put together the Mega Blok Planetoids City set that was released in 1997. It’s the biggest set out of all the planetoid sets and comes with a track measuring 3.5ft x 2.8ft and a motorized car. It was a fun trip down memory lane to build this set again.
Set Details:
Set Number: 9300
Name: Planetoid City
Pieces: 1000 pieces
Figures Included: The set includes 7 figures named SON-R, T-TANIUM, D-TEKTOR, MANTOR, TYRAX, ANTAX, and REPZYL MASTER.
Features:
- Stickers: Several stickers were included in the set.
- Instructions Booklet
- Functional Elements: Gun turrets with missiles that can fire and a motorized track car with a light on top.
The color scheme was similar to glow in the dark colors. It included a starter plate and lap counter on the track. Two pin plates, each with a longer and a shorter pin, can be placed on the motorized car to switch between manual and automatic track direction.
After completing the set, I found that it was 98% complete, with only a few missing/broken pieces and a couple of missing stickers. I was able to replace most of the missing pieces with Lego pieces.
What I like: My favorite part of the set is the aliens. All the characters were unique and unlike other toy figures available at the time. I also enjoyed playing with the track and motorized car, though the technology may have been behind its time.
What I didn’t like: The color scheme of the set is certainly memorable, but some colors detract from the sets overall appeal.
Conclusion
Megabloks frequently create sets designed for younger builders. The planetoids theme and alien figures add an imaginative touch to the set. Putting the set together was pretty easy, but it did take some time since there were 1000 pieces. The track is simple to assemble and you can easily switch up the configurations of the track and bases.
